BOCES Students Build Allegany County Special Olympics Bocce Courts

Cattaraugus-Allegany BOCES Building Trades students used their class time to outfit Allegany County Special Olympics bocce teams with two new bocce courts.

The collaboration with Allegany County Special Olympics came about when Allegany Arc’s Marketing Director Carrie Redman attended BOCES annual Open House and was introduced to Building Trades Teacher Mike Fidurko. “Mike was talking about the various projects his students had worked on and how they enjoy working on-site in the community so I asked him if he would consider designing and constructing two handicap-accessible bocce courts for the Allegany County Special Olympics bocce teams,” says Redman.

Fidurko took the project idea to his students who started drawing up designs and discussing construction options. The students tried various prototypes before finalizing their design and spending multiple days on-site constructing the courts behind the PWI facility on the Andover Road, Wellsville.

“The Building Trades program at BOCES provides students with a background applicable to both residential and commercial construction,” says Fidurko. “Students learn technical skills in specialized areas of carpentry, wiring, plumbing and heating. Blueprint reading, material codes and specifications are also extensively taught.”

Through community projects, Fidurko says, students gain valuable hands-on, real world experience and skills and make important personal contacts within their field of interest; complementing their academic background and putting them ahead of their competition.

“We are so thankful to the BOCES students for constructing two new bocce courts for our Special Olympics athletes,” says Ashleigh Cline, Special Olympics Coordinator. “The bocce teams begin practicing Monday, July 13th and the new courts will no doubt give us an edge-up on our competition. Additionally, coaching and volunteer positions are always available with no experience necessary – just be prepared to have a good time.
