Allegany Arc's Wellsville Redemption Center continues to thrive since opening in 2005. The Wellsville Redemption Center is a New York State Bottle and Can Redemption Center located at 27 West Hanover Street, Wellsville. They accept all brands and sizes of New York State returnable bottles and cans.
Success for this business isn't just based on the number of cans brought in annually. Success is seen in the jobs now being held by people with developmental disabilities.
Michele Nye, Arc's Director of Vocational Educational Services, says "Allegany Arc's Achieve program is constantly on the lookout for career prospects for people with developmental disabilities. Living in a rural area, opportunities can seem more limited. The Redemption Center was a perfect opportunity to create a business that keeps people employed."
Currently, one person works at the Redemption Center full-time and ten people work there part-time. The employees take their jobs very seriously and are diligent in their duties. People may take away dollars from redeeming cans here but what they give is so much more valuable.
The group that runs the Redemption Center takes pride in keeping their work area clean and giving the best customer service possible. Many area groups use the center as a fund-raiser as there are many local businesses and non-profits that have accounts there. All you have to do is drop your cans off and tell them who you want the money donated to. Sports teams, youth groups, and other non-profits are also able to have day drives as long as they set them up with the Manager prior to the event. Currently, there are 67 fund-raising accounts open at the Wellsville Redemption Center.
You will get your 5 cents/can no matter where you redeem your refundable bottles and cans. But at Allegany Arc's Redemption Center, you also have the opportunity to make the difference in lives of people with developmental disabilities. They gain real work experience and become better integrated with the community.
The Redemption Center is currently open from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The Center is also open from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm on Thursdays and 8:00 am to 3:00 pm on Saturdays.
